Yahweh is often seen as the most holy and sacred name of God so much so that it is sometimes written as YHWH. The spelling breaks the name down into its constituent consonants as the Israelites believed this name to be too sacred to be spoken or written fully. The Israelites did this to also ensure that God’s name would not be misused as He had warned them not to misuse it in the Ten Commandments:
“You must not misuse the name of the Lord your God. The Lord will not let you go unpunished if you misuse his name.
Exodus 20:7
The name is used more 6500 times in the Old Testament, and from it, we derive the name ‘Jehovah’. The name ‘YHWH’ is often written as ‘the LORD’ in the English translations of the Bible.
“Listen, O Israel! The LORD is our God, the LORD alone. 5 And you must love the LORD your God with all your heart, all your soul, and all your strength.
Deuteronomy 6:4-5
Yahweh means ‘the One that is’ and ‘the One that will be’ showing God’s sovereignty and power. It is first used to describe God in Genesis 2:4. God first used it to describe Himself with this name in Exodus 3:
